Steps2MilesCalculator.com was built around one idea: a step count is only useful once you know what it means in real-world distance. We built the calculator we wished existed — fast, transparent about its formula, and adjustable to your own stride.
Our Mission
Millions of people track their steps every day, through a phone, a Fitbit, an Apple Watch, or a Garmin. But a raw step count doesn't tell you how far you've actually walked or run, and most devices quietly apply a generic stride-length assumption to fill that gap. Our mission is to make that hidden calculation visible and adjustable, so anyone — a walker chasing a daily goal, a runner planning a route, a student solving a conversion problem, or a recruit preparing for a fitness test — can get an accurate, explainable distance in seconds, with nothing hidden behind an app login or a paywall.
We believe a good calculator should teach as well as calculate. That's why every page on this site shows the formula behind the result, not just the number itself, so you can trust the output and learn how stride length affects your own numbers.
Our Story
This site started from a simple frustration: after switching between a phone pedometer, a running app, and a smartwatch, the same walk produced three different "distance" readings from the same step count. None of the apps explained why, or let us adjust the stride length they were quietly using behind the scenes.
[Founder name] built the first version of this calculator as a simple spreadsheet to settle the question, using the well-documented steps-to-distance formula taught in exercise science: distance equals steps multiplied by stride length, divided by the number of feet in a mile. That spreadsheet became a small web tool, then grew into the full site you're using today, with support for both directions of the conversion, adjustable stride presets, and a full reference library of examples, tables, and frequently asked questions.
The goal has stayed the same since that first spreadsheet: give people a transparent, accurate, and completely free way to turn steps into miles, and miles into steps.
Our Methodology
The calculator uses the standard steps-to-distance formula used in exercise science and physical-therapy research:
Miles = (Steps × Stride Length in feet) ÷ 5,280
Our default stride-length presets — 2.2 feet, 2.5 feet, and 2.7 feet — reflect commonly cited ranges for adult walking stride in published exercise-science references, including guidance referenced by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). We also let you enter a fully custom stride length, because no preset can account for your exact height, pace, or walking style.
We keep the formula and presets under periodic review. If commonly cited stride-length research changes, or if user feedback highlights an edge case we haven't accounted for, we update the calculator and note the change in our review date, shown in the author box on the homepage.
